  • Influenza is serious! We often read about serious complications from influenza only affecting elderly people, babies, and young children, not people who are usually healthy and in the prime of their life.  However, flu can be very dangerous to young adults, as was seen in the deadly influenza pandemic of 1918. This pandemic caused 40 to 50 million deaths worldwide and many of these deaths were among healthy young adults in their 20s and 30s, not just the very old and very young.

  • Three influenza pandemics have occurred in the 20th century: the pandemic in 1918, mentioned above, as well as one in 1957 and 1968. Deaths from the latter two pandemics are estimated at two million and one million, respectively.
